History

The 964 is the successor model of the Porsche 911 "G-Model" and came 1988 first only as all-wheel drive Carrera4 - version on the market. The new concept was a simplified version of the 959 all-wheel drive technology.
From model year 1990, the 964 was offered in parallel with rear-wheel drive Carrera 2 and four-wheel drive Carrera 4. Both models were sold in the body versions Coupé, Cabriolet and Targa.

Generally the Porsche 964 contained many innovations, which were not offered with the predecessor model, like among other things ABS and power steering, starting from 1992 also airbags. The engine power of the 964 ranges from 184 kW (250 PS) for the Carrera models to 265 kW (360 PS) for the Turbo model.

Starting with the 964, Porsche rejected the torsion bar suspension of types 356 and 911 that had been used for 40 years: the 964 has a completely new light alloy chassis with MacPherson struts at the front and coil springs at the rear.

The 964 also continued to rely on the proven air-cooled six-cylinder boxer engine with dry sump lubrication, which was further developed with dual ignition and an improved electronic engine control DME (Digital Engine Electronics) from Bosch.
The engine, which has been increased by 400 cm³ to 3.6 liters of displacement, delivers 184 kW (250 PS) at a speed of 6100 rpm. Another innovation was the DME with integrated knock control (one knock sensor each on the left and right, cylinder rows 1-3 and 4-6 are connected by an aluminium bridge), which automatically adjusts the ignition for different fuel qualities. Together with the aerodynamically improved body, this has reduced fuel consumption compared with the old 3.2-litre engine. The tank was therefore reduced from 85 litres of the predecessor model to 77 litres, which benefited the boot size.

Despite the many innovations, the Porsche 911 sales designation was retained; the term 911 was already too closely associated with Porsche at that time to have been able to do without it. In addition, the Porsche 964 with its characteristics corresponded exactly to what the 911 customers expected from a modern sports car at the end of the 1980s.

Due to the more aerodynamically favourable body shape and above all because of the full covering of the car floor, the 911's unparalleled air resistance with a cw value of 0.32 was achieved. A 964 with 250 hp thus achieved the same top speed of around 260 km/h as the Porsche 911 Turbo (Type 930) from the old G model series, which was 37 kW (50 hp) more powerful. The rear spoiler of the 964, which extends automatically at a speed of approx. 80 km/h, replaced the optional fixed rear spoiler on all Carrera models. In addition to better aerodynamics, this also results in better engine cooling.

This vehicle is from German first delivery and first hand.
