History

The Porsche 964 – 964 is the internal designation for this generation of the 911 and was built between 1988 and 1993. It was the successor of the heavily outdated 911 G-model which was built over a very long period of 15 years and featured significant technical innovations as well as styling revisions compared to its predecessor.

The 964 was a more modern and comfortable evolution of the 911 while maintaining the classic design of it. The most prominent design changes at the exterior were the new front and rear bumpers which were discussed controversial by 911 enthusiasts.

The main technical innovations introduced with the 964 platform included standard power steering and ABS and an optional all-wheel drive system derivated from the Porsche 959 supercar. Improved aerodynamics included the front and rear bumper, redesigned underbody and – for the Carrera and Speedster version – a new rear spoiler which automatically extended at speeds above 80 km/h. The 964 therewith achieved a very good drag factor of 0.32 allowing the standard Carrera 2 with 250bhp to run 260 km/h, the same top speed as the earlier 911 turbo (930) with an additional 50bhp achieved.

The Porsche 964 was available in the following versions: Carrera 2, Carrera 4, Carrera RS, Carrera RS America, Carrera RS 3.8, Speedster, Turbo, Turbo 3.6 and Turbo S as well as some exclusive versions produced in smaller numbers.

964 Carrera 2
The Carrera 2 was the rear-wheel drive standard model of the 964 featuring a 3.6 litre flat-six engine (M64) with dry-sump lubrication, twin-spark ignition and a new BOSCH DME controller with knock regulation and electronic fuel injection. Power output was 250bhp @ 6100 rpm and 310Nm @ 4800 rpm. The interior was only slightly changed compared to the G-model by fitting a redesigned centre console, a shortened gear knob and new instruments featuring shining-trough lighting technology. The Carrera 2 did the 0-100km/h sprint in 5.7s and reached a top speed of 260km/h.

964 Carrera 4
The Carrera 4 was the first standard model Porsche offered with a permanent four-wheel drive. Besides the different transmission (and caused by this an additional weight of 100kg) it was identical to the Carrera 2.

This beautiful low mileage car is out of a Japanese collection.
