The Porsche 911 GT3 is the name given to the sports versions of the Porsche 911 with a water-cooled naturally aspirated engine built since 1999. The sports versions of the 911 with air-cooled naturally aspirated engine produced between 1972 and 1997, which are its direct predecessors, were called the Carrera RS.
Like all Porsche 911 GT models, the 911 GT3 is characterised by the absence of the comfort features not required for sporty locomotion.

For some automobile purists and above all for many Porsche enthusiasts, it thus embodies their preferred concentration on the equipment essential for sporty driving. Similar to its turbocharged sister models Porsche 911 GT1 and 911 GT2, the GT3 is also inspired in many respects by motorsport; it is the road version of the 911 GT3 Cup racing car currently used in the Porsche Supercup and has only been modified as far as is necessary for possible everyday use and in particular for obtaining road approval.

As already the GT3 models of the types 996 and 997 the 991 GT3 which appeared in 2013 had also a fixed rear wing on the engine cover as well as front and rear aprons made especially for the model. As a further characteristic design feature, the two centrally arranged exhaust pipes below the license plate holder, which were used for the first time on the 997 GT3 models produced between 2006 and 2011, have been retained.

In addition, the new generation increased its performance and was still more economical in terms of fuel consumption. Thanks to the use of lightweight materials and reduced comfort features compared with the Carrera models, the unladen weight (according to DIN 70020) was reduced by around 40 kg to around 1,350 kg compared with the predecessor models. This made the GT3 based on the Porsche 991 the lightest GT3 model since the model series was presented in 1999. Production of the GT3 991 was supplemented by the GT3 RS in February 2015. The 991 GT3 accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds and reached a top speed of 315 km/h. The GT3 RS was also produced in February 2015. On the Nordschleife of the Nürburgring it could deliver a lap time of less than 7:30 min. The 991 GT3 RS delivered 368 kW (500 hp), accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.3 seconds and reached a top speed of 310 km/h. The 991 GT3 RS was able to reach a maximum speed of 3.5 mph (0.5 mph) and a maximum speed of 2.5 mph (0.5 mph).

In 2017 the GT3 received a model upgrade (991.2), the engine capacity was increased to 4 litres and the output to 500 hp, so that this model also has an incredible capacity of 125 hp per litre. Lap times in tests or in the Porsche Sports Cup show that this model is hardly inferior to its stronger, but also wider brother 991 GT3 RS.
