History

With the 997 series, the vehicle design was again based more on the Porsche 993 in order to emphasise the traditional features of the 911, which some customers missed in the 996 model. In particular, the front section with the round headlights is reminiscent of the classic Porsche 911.

Technically speaking, there was little change compared to the predecessor 996. The engine was still a water-cooled six-cylinder boxer engine.

However, the structure of the model range was changed to match that of the Porsche Boxster and the Porsche Cayenne. Since then, the element that determines the name has primarily been the engine performance. More powerful models are given the suffix S or GTS. In addition, the cabriolet body shape (additional Cabriolet ) and the all-wheel drive type (additional 4 ) determine the other additions to the model name.

The Porsche 911 Carrera was offered in the two performance variants, the Carrera and the Carrera S. The Porsche 911 Carrera is available in two different versions, the Carrera and the Carrera S. The 3.6-litre engine of the Carrera has a maximum output of 239 kW (325 hp) and the 3.8-litre engine of the Carrera S provides a maximum output of 261 kW (355 hp).[58] Both models were available in Coupé and Cabriolet body styles and could be ordered with rear or all-wheel drive.

Starting in November 2006, the 997 series was supplemented by the Targa 4 and Targa 4S models, which were delivered exclusively with all-wheel drive. 59] Exterior differences to the 997 Carrera can be found particularly in the large panoramic glass roof and in the silhouette, which was characterised by the pointed rear side windows and the anodised and polished aluminium trim strips on both sides.60] Like the Carrera, the engine of the Targa 4 produced 239 kW (325 hp) and the Targa 4S 261 kW (355 hp) was produced with the more powerful engine of the Carrera S. The Targa 4S was equipped with the same engine as the Carrera S, but with the same power output.

In model year 2009, the model series underwent a facelift. Apart from modified air intakes and newly designed LED tail lights as well as LED daytime running lights, there were major technical changes. The engines of the Carrera and Carrera S were converted to direct injection. This increased the output of the Carrera to 254 kW (345 PS) and that of the Carrera S to 283 kW (385 PS). 61] The Targa 4 and Targa 4S were also revised and delivered with the more powerful engines. In the same model year, the Carrera S was available with an increased engine output of 16 kW (23 PS) to 300 kW (408 PS).[62]

In the same year the Carrera GTS was introduced to the model range by Porsche. This car, which was produced both as a coupé and as a convertible, had the performance-enhanced boxer engine of the Carrera S, which produced 300 kW (408 hp) at a speed of 7300 rpm. With the standard six-speed manual transmission, the car reached a top speed of 306 km/h. The engine was equipped with a six-speed manual transmission. The car filled the performance gap between the Carrera S and the GT3. The most conspicuous feature was the 44 mm wider body on the rear axle compared to the Carrera S. The car's performance was also improved by the addition of the Carrera S and the GT3. The GTS could be ordered with rear or all-wheel drive.

The interior of the 997 was again extensively revised compared to its predecessor, as it was criticised by many customers. Porsche's design was also based on the 993, with special modifications to the speedometer instruments and the switches in the centre console. As a new feature, a combination instrument with a 4.6-inch TFT colour screen was integrated, which can display data from the on-board computer, navigation and audio systems and warnings.

Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet (Type 997)
The all-wheel-drive 911 Turbo remained the top model of the large-series models. The built-in 3.6-litre biturbo engine produced 353 kW (480 hp). This turbo was the first series-produced vehicle with a gasoline engine from a German manufacturer to have adjustable guide vanes on the exhaust gas turbines of the two turbochargers. These provided in the lower speed range for more spontaneous responsiveness and better pull-through. The 997 Turbo thus accelerated to 100 km/h in 3.8 seconds. The top speed was 310 km/h.

After the 2009 model revision, the engine capacity was increased to 3.8 litres, increasing the turbo's engine output to 368 kW (500 hp). In addition, the Turbo S was introduced, whose 3.8-litre engine produced 390 kW (530 hp). Both the Turbo and the Turbo S could be ordered as Coupé or Cabriolet. Compared to the Carrera models, the Turbo has a wider body at the front and rear axle. Furthermore, the front and rear fairings are lowered to street level and contain larger ventilation openings. On both sides in front of the rear axle there are air inlets which clearly distinguish the Turbo from the 911 with naturally aspirated engines when viewed from the side. Traditionally, a large rear spoiler is mounted on the bonnet, which can be used on the 997 Turbo!
